Lakhmi Chand: The Kalidas of Haryana:-
Lakhmi Chand, also known as Pandit Lakhmi Chand, was an Indian poet of the Haryanvi language. He was given the title of ‘Pandit’ and was also known as the Kalidas of Haryana. Born in Janti Kalan, Sonipat, Haryana, Lakhmi Chand was a great poet who made significant contributions to Haryanvi literature. His work is filled with songs containing messages on moral values, which earned him respect in all corners of Haryana and was called ahead of his time.
Early Life and Background:-
Lakhmi Chand was born in a Gaur Brahmin family in a village located in Sonepat district of Haryana. Despite facing opposition from his family, he pursued his passion for art and poetry. Lakhmi Chand is usually considered as illiterate, yet he was a great poet of the Haryanvi language. He used to sing various stories with great morals in his ‘Raagni’ and gave a message to live a good lifestyle through skits called Saang. He also entertained people through his acts Saang in the native language.
Contributions to Haryanvi Literature:-
Lakhmi Chand’s writings have had a marked influence on contemporary culture and society of Haryana. Annually, Haryana Kala Parishad confers the Pandit Lakhmi Chand Award to people for their contributions to Haryanvi literature. Some of his widely popular works include ‘Lakhmichand Ka Brahmgyaan,’ which has been sung by various Haryanvi artists after his death.
Legacy:-
Lakhmi Chand’s life story was recently portrayed in the movie ‘DADA LAKHMI,’ directed by Yashpal Sharma. His legacy continues to inspire generations of poets and artists in Haryana.
